This mock journal cover was inspired by the Scientific American article “Why Do We Dream? Maybe to Literally See the World upon Awakening,” which explores the relationship between dreaming and the visual cortex. The article proposes that dreaming is essential for preserving the function of the visual cortex. Because the brain is highly neuroplastic, neurons are constantly competing for neural territory, and dreams may help protect and maintain the visual pathways that support sight.

The illustration visualizes this idea through a surreal, dreamlike landscape. The optic tract is depicted with branching golden arcs, carrying sensory information toward the visual cortex. Within her “dream” she is looking at a field of shooting stars, each one shaped and firing like a neuron, symbolizing the protective neural activity that takes place while we sleep.
