This neuroanatomical plate was created for Dr. Risheng Xu, a neurosurgeon at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. The focal image is within the skull, with the large arteriovenous fistula located at the cribriform plate. Half of the brain is removed to more clearly show the relation between structures. An inset on the top left is used to orient the viewer and the inset on the top right gives a close up, frontal view of the fistula.

Process

The rough sketch began with a full oblique posterior view of the skull with the brain removed with a sagittal cut. However, as the sketches became more refined a closer cropped view was chosen to best show the fistula and surrounding structures with the greatest clarity. The flat colors shows an expanded illustration for my personal asset library while the view on this piece was cropped and framed with a dark vignette for the client.
